How do we clarify what we do exactly, as creatives in interactive storytelling? As an art director working with a leading agency ánd proud to be part of NOOMATS, I was challenged to put it into words. Our common ground is evident: we imaginate. But what do we mean by that exactly? And what makes us more than the sum of parts?
Oh my. I have always preferred drawing images. My only notion of writing, is the books I read and the way I read them. Driven by a strange kind of inquisitiveness I tend to keep, even with reading novels, a pencil whithin reach. For occasions where I may crow: now we’re talking and should wish to confirm the clause with an underscore and a broad approving smile. Or… in order to comment the story villainiously: So what? or even poor dear, it says in the margin. It is often as if a direct, invisible line is drawn between me and the story.
Stories. Written, published, as exquisitely layouted hardcopy, or brought across as theatre, opera, a three-dimensional installation or as traditional stage-presentation, there is this invisible line between the story and me – Me, to whom the story was by no means in Chinese, but still awfully convinced of what to think. And what to make of it.
What is bound to happen on this location is designed by my imagination. It’s like a soul invasion of the bare space, just untill the space it surrenders and becomes ‘mine’.
Desiging by imagining, that’s what I regard as my profession. I’m virually projecting the show in my head, in video and audio, in light and sound, in action and reaction. Everything qualifies as ‘material’!
The art of creation is to subsequently condense the image in your head. Scetch, draw, test, build, calulate. …An art? That’s the prodigious part. The designing process seems so effortless! Give every creative his preferred material, every imagineer his own set of tools.
Sneakers – no socks
The show itself, always a few weeks later, would be the spectacle where I’d find myself peeping from backstage in a costume of jeans and sneakers – no socks. That’s where my private imagination may take over duty. Providing a shi*load of inspiration! The invisible line along which my imagination is nurished, becomes the outline of a brand new show. The line becomes a circle.
The same line connects people and stories, online and on location. From idea to concept, from plan till production, from design to the technical realisation of amazing, storytelling concepts. Concepts that fuel the imagination of any audience! NOOTMATS features the expertise whithin a solid network of independent professionals.
What makes us more than the sum of parts? It’s the circle of inspiration that is so well-known to us, creatives. We imaginate. Here’s to: working from the heart (hence our involvement in the projects that we do.) And to not knowing how else.

“Thanks to their contribution, the exhibit has become a big success with regard to the subject matter.” Vera Hoogsteden
Breda’s Museum has worked together with Marnix van de Vijver and Tobias Baeten, both entrepreneurs in NOOMATS, in a very pleasant manner. For the exhibit ‘In kringen van de jonge Vincent’ (17/7-1/11 2015) a specific element ‘nature experience’ was put in their care almost exclusively. It was also expected of them to contribute to the harmonious coordination of various aspects of the exhibition. A complicated assignment under demanding time constraints as well as budget limitations.
Against this background, I have come to know NOOMATS as remarkably creative, flexible team players, with a tremendous sense of commitment and responsibility for the final product. Thanks to their contribution, the exhibit has become a big success with regard to the subject matter. Breda’s Museum has amazed its audience with a combination of, on the one hand, a new approach to art in a museum and, on the other hand, the surprising experience of nature as a source of inspiration. The collaboration between all parties, including those involved in the project ‘Omtrent Vincent’, has been an invigorating experience thanks to the positive attitude of NOOMATS.
The project was realized within budget, deadlines were met, we were supported with enthusiasm in our communication and publicity efforts, and during the activities they were welcoming towards the press and work relations who were invited for a preview, amongst others.
In short, gentlemen, well done! It is most definitely worth repeating.
